The Best Schools in Anne Arundel County Maryland
Anne Arundel County is known for its schools and it’s no surprise why. The county has some of the best teachers and schools in the state. We’ve rounded up the best of them here:
Kindergarten-3rd: Mayfield Woods Middle School
Mayfield Woods Middle School is a public school located in Severn, MD. It’s a high school and middle school. It has over 1,000 students enrolled annually, with an average class size of 20 students which makes the learning experience much more comfortable and intimate than the other schools listed here. There are many programs offered including Spanish immersion classes (which can be taken until 8th grade), STEM courses such as robotics or coding clubs, and many others that help you learn more about yourself as well as others around you!
4th-6th: Severn River Middle School
Severn River Middle School is a public school in Severna Park, Maryland. It is located in Anne Arundel County. The school mascot is the pirate, and their colors are black and blue.
Severn River Middle School was named for its proximity to the Severn River. This school has been serving Anne Arundel County since 1975; it is one of three middle schools that serve the county’s students ages 7-12 (the other two being North County Middle School and Centennial High School).
7th-8th: Old Mill Middle North
Old Mill Middle North is a public school in Severna Park, Maryland. The school has an excellent academic program with a focus on science, math, English, and social studies. The school’s sports teams are called the Wildcats and they compete in basketball, soccer, baseball, and softball. In addition to these sports teams, there are also cheerleading squads for girls and boys that practice before and after school.
9th-12th: Severna Park High School
Severna Park High School is located in Severna Park, Maryland. The school was founded in 1955 and has a student population of 1,500 students. The school has a student-teacher ratio of 13:1, which is higher than the national average of 15:1.
The high school’s graduation rate is 98%, which is much higher than the national average of 83%.
These schools rank among the highest in the state
The ranking system is not without controversy. Some argue that the rankings are too heavily dependent on test scores and do not adequately account for factors such as teacher quality or school environment. There is also debate over whether an Arundel County ranking should include schools outside of the county line, such as those in Calvert County or Prince George’s County (the latter of which includes Annapolis).

There are 4 Advanced Placement courses offered at Fort Meade: American History, Biology, Calculus AB and English Language & Composition/Literature & Composition. The average SAT score for this school is just below 1000 (990). Bowie High School – This public high school has been ranked as one of the top 10 schools in Baltimore City by US News and World Report due to its outstanding academic achievement across all subjects as well as its diverse student population which includes various races and ethnicities.
