Cleveland Park, DC
Neighborhood Facts for Cleveland Park, DC
A 1903 Washington Times article called Cleveland Park the “prettiest suburb of Washington,” and touted the virtues of the neighborhood’s fresh country air, elbow room, woods and fields, and peacefulness.
Today, those words still ring remarkably true, with Cleveland Park one of DC’s most coveted locations in which to live.
Named for President Grover Cleveland, who once had a home here, the neighborhood was first called Pretty Prospects and then Rosedale. It dates to the 18th century and was originally a single estate of nearly a thousand acres.
A few buildings still stand from the early days, including Revolutionary War General Urah Forrest’s yellow farmhouse on Newark Street. DC’s oldest house, the site is now a park maintained by the Rosedale Conservancy.
Just before the turn of the 20th century, the city extended the electric streetcar line up Connecticut Avenue making Cleveland Park DC’s earliest “suburb.” You can still see some of the area’s earliest homes on Newark Street, Highland Place, and Macomb.
Cleveland Park is renowned for its wealth of popular late 19th and early 20th-century architecture with most of the single-family homes here were built between 1894 and 1930.
As you drive along the tree-lined streets you’ll glimpse examples of Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Mission Revival, bungalows, Shingle, Dutch Colonial Revival, and Craftsman style homes. There are also some important modern structures from Waldron and Winthrop Faulkner as well as I.M. Pei, the designer of The National Gallery’s East wing.
Most of the homes built during this period are constructed of wood and have incredible decorative details such as turrets, bay windows, decorative brackets, and Georgian porches that still act as neighborhood gathering places. They sit on generous lots and are set well back from the street.
Today, the core of Cleveland Park is still heavily residential and home to many prominent Washingtonians, but there are some apartment buildings as well as mixed commercial developments along its arteries. It is home to the Melvin Hazen Park and Cleveland Park.
Residents here love at-home barbecues and dinner parties, but there are plenty of eateries and casual drinking spots along Connecticut Avenue. Residents are within easy walking distance to the National Zoo, the Washington National Cathedral, and Rock Creek Park’s hiking and cycling trails.
